How a deprived childhood leaves its mark on the brain
When "Mr Mason2 was 14, he and his drug addict mother burgled a house and stabbed the owner's dog to death. Since then he has put his stepfather in a coma and been charged with a double shooting, but escaped from jail before the case could come to trial.
Mr Mason is among the most violent and disturbed children in Britain - regarded by the public as antisocial and feral. But now Britain's neuroscientists are to study the brains of children like him in an attempt to prove that, rather than simply being "bad", the wiring of these children's brains has been affected by their abuse or neglect as toddlers.
The £1.6m research project commissioned by Kids Company, the children's charity, hopes to establish that over-exposure to fright hormones damages children's brain development and leaves them prone to violent outbursts and unable to calm themselves.

Can the cycle of violence be closed?
The news that some of Britain's leading neuroscientists are to collaborate on a study of children's brains is bound to be treated warily in some quarters. Nor will the purpose of the research - to investigate whether early abuse and deprivation might cause changes in the brain that foster disturbed and violent behaviour in later life - reduce the worries. Examining the brain for physical characteristics that might help to explain aberrant behaviour of whatever kind conjures up a picture of fusty laboratories, rows of jars containing brains preserved in formaldehyde, and long-discredited theories about nature always trumping nurture.

Are the scars of deprivation imprinted on a child's brain?
A deprived childhood could have profound effects on the developing brain, experts believe.
Academics from five British institutions, including Oxford University, will study the brains of troubled youngsters in an attempt to prove that their 'wiring' was affected by the abuse or neglect they suffered as toddlers. They will use scans to determine whether some brain areas are over-active and other parts are under-used.
The Peace of Mind project, commissioned by the charity Kids Company, will also look at whether providing such youngsters with surrogate parenting and loving care has a positive effect on the brain.

Abuse affecting '1 in 10 children'
One in ten British children is being abused or neglected at home and most are ignored by social workers, as well as the country's politicians, charities are claiming.
As many as 1.5million youngsters are estimated to suffer abuse each year but only 550,000 are referred to social services. Over-worked care departments are allocating a social worker to only 35,100 of these, according to figures published today.
Campaigner Camila Batmanghelidjh said: 'We've got a social services system that's just not fit for purpose. It can't cope with the serious level of child abuse in Britain.'

Girls aged eight are carrying weapons
Children as young as eight are being forced to carry knives or work as drug couriers by criminal gangs.
Girls have drugs secreted intimately inside them by dealers who drive them around - posing as fathers giving their daughters a lift. Youngsters aged just 13 or 14 are being caught with guns - running drugs between dealers on their bikes. Now a campaign group - backed by Oscar-winning actress Dame Helen Mirren - is trying to turn the tide by reaching youngsters before the drug lords do.
Kids Company founder Camila Batmanghelidjh accused politicians, authorities and the media of paying attention to youngsters only when they misbehave.
